People often complained about the rise of the cancel culture online. Then came 2020 and literally cancelled nearly everything “in real life.” As New Year’s Eve approaches, we usually summarize hits and misses to adjust our forthcoming resolutions accordingly. In a challenging, traumatizing year without music festivals, red carpet premieres, sporting events and blockbuster exhibitions, all eyes and ears turned online. Video-gaming thrived, TikTok exploded, streaming platforms outperformed their wildest dreams. With so much attention gone virtual it seemed natural that social media would take on additional importance.
